Ruminating on Life ...1

A weekend is a good time to ponder and ruminate on the basic philosophy of life. I do read up on the Bhagavad Gita and Vedanta Treatise every morning before breakfast. Few messages keep appealing to me ...this Life is a Dream and all of us are actors in a play. Hence there is no point getting too caught up with trivial matters. At the same desires are like poison and temptations the snake in them ,which when given rise to can kill us. This is similar to the snake with 5 heads in the Yamuna which Lord Krishna helped to get rid of. Another important element we need to fight is our Ego ...this is akin to the clothes of the Gopis left behind on the riverside which Lord Krishna withheld. The Gopis symbolize all devotees of Lord Krishna on earth and the clothes their ego.In order to reach God one needs to leave behind their ego .

The other books I have been recently reading is Meditations by Marcus Aurelius , Epictetus' Manual of Life , the Tripura Rahasya suggested by my friend Anshuman Chakraborty etc. All seem to have a common thread which links to the thoughts in the Vedanta. Epictetus has some thoughts which ties p with today's life.He asks us to live within oneself and not degrade yourself by cracking jokes and making yourself visible to the public. It results in degradation through loss of concentration.Reminded me of the time wasted in facebook status updates, tracking the likes and taking excessive interest in other people's lives . There is always great happiness in discovering oneself. Even as canto 2 of the Bhagvatam says ,the body has 3 regions ...near the leg , near the belly and above the neck. The bones represent mountains, the blood and veins the rivers and streams.Higher people who have attained liberalisation stay in the region above their necks while you debase yourself while going lower . More on this later .

Spirits of Estonia

http://www.inyourpocket.com/estonia/tallinn/Spirits-of-Estonia_56060f 1 For some of our readers, vodka might just be some colorless liquid that tastes like rubbing alcohol but goes great mixed in a cocktail. In Estonia however, hard liquor is pretty serious stuff.  Spirits can be made from many raw materials including grapes, potato, and grain. These days in Estonia the vast majority of vodka is made using high quality rye grain. First the raw material is fermented using yeast, which creates a weak alcohol or mash. Next this product is distilled creating a much stronger alcohol. Finally the impurities are filtered off, and water is added to bring the percentage from about 96 to about 40.And that is how you make vodka! Of course there is much to be said about quality and it certainly varies from brand to brand. The world’s best vodkas are made from the finest grains, the purest waters, multiple distillation & special filtration techniques.    A little history   Alcohol wa
