In his book Chanakya Niti, also known as Niti Shastra, Chanakya has listed the following principles for a person to follow inorder to build in them a strong character which in turn would lead to a successful and meaningful life.
1.Vinyasya Moolan Vridhopsewa.
Acharya Chanakya says that humility lies in the service of elderly or old people. Only when one renders honest service to elders can he understand the real meaning of humility.
2.Vridhsevya Vigyanata
True knowledge can be attained by serving the old.
3.Aalbadhlaabho Naalasya.
Acharya Chanakya states that a lazy person can achieve nothing in life! Be it money, education or anything a lazy person can’t achieve any of these.
4.Agnindahadapee Vishishta Vaakyarushyama.
In this aphorism, he warns that harsh and bitter language can cause irreparable damage which can be more harmful than the pain from fire burn! Therefore, we should always speak politely with utmost care and never utter rude words.
5.Apryatnaata Kaaryavipatibharvati.
The wise sage says that we must put in sincere efforts, practice and hard work in all the tasks we undertake otherwise all our undertakings will go in vain.
6.Na Davapramaanaa Kaaryasiddhi
Acharya Chanakya states that those who depend on Luck can never achieve success in their lives.
To elaborate this, such people don’t put in sincere efforts in any work and wait for supernatural miracles; ultimately ruining their entire life in this wait.
7.Daana Dharma.
Charity is the prime religion/duty of everyone ; it should be performed humbly and in the righteous manner towards the deserving.
8.Baaladapyarthajaat- a Shunuyaat?
Acharya Chanakya conveys that students should always be given true and meaningful information and never be taught through the medium of fictitious stories.
9.Kadaapi Purusha Naavmanyet.
He says, “Never insult a noble man”; a wise and noble person should be treated with respect and looked up to for his wisdom.
10.Anuraagastu Fallen Suchyatey.
According to the great sage, our affections/ feelings are revealed by our actions and not by words alone. This sutra can be easily related with the popular quote, “Actions speak louder than our words.”
11.Naastayadhrateyrahikamamush- apikama
An impatient person has no present or future.
It can be best understood that an impatient person doesn’t have the patience to work at length and at the same time expects immediate and miraculous results. Acharya declares that such people attain nothing in the long run.
12.Trishnaaya Matishghaaghtey.
The wise sage says, Greed clouds one’s intelligence!
We can interpret that greed leads to insatiable desires for material gains and pollutes one’s mind. The intellect fails to distinguish between right/wrong and often adopts wrong means to achieve those quenchless desires thus ultimately leading to a pathetic end.
13.Naastyankar Samah Shatru
“Arrogance is one’s greatest enemy”. Therefore, we must conduct ourselves righteously, with humility and never resort to arrogance and pride.
14.Vidya Chorerapi na Graham.
Education is the most secure and priceless property unlike material property like jewels, money etc, which can be easily robbed from us. Our knowledge is that treasure that remains with us till we transcend into the world next.
15.Indriyaana Prasham Shaastram.
The wise sage says, “That real knowledge is that which keeps our senses under control."
16.Aaryavritamanutish- theta.
Acharya guides us to maintain harmonious relations with others at all times.
17.Sarva Jaytyakrodha.
Those who have full control over their anger are appreciated and liked by all. Therefore, we should have full control over anger and never let our anger have control over us.
18.Gurunaan Maata Gariyasi. Sarvavsathasu Mata Bhartavya.
Acharya Chanakya says that our mother is the best teacher and it's our first and foremost duty to take care of her devotedly in all conditions.
19.Vyavhaarentagart- aatmachaara Suchiyati.
The great sage says that, “One’s character is depicted by one’s behavior”. To elaborate this further, our values and morals are best reflected in our behavior/ dealings with others. How much respect and ease we put in accepting others especially those who are marginally different from us depicts our true character. Staying firm on our values and principles without being insolent amidst a flood of opposition is a depiction of good and strong character.
20.Ahimsa Lakshano Dharma.
Acharya Chanakya says that Non violence is the basic tenet of every religious faith. Therefore, we should deal all matters with peace and never take to violent means.
