*The City of Kolkata has its own old world charm with all the amenities of the new world.
*On one hand the architecture of the business areas of the City takes you back to Old World Britain and the business houses of LeadenHall Street. Some of the buildings which send a tingling sensation of Britain through me are Duncan House , Balmer Lawrie Building , the Old Standard Chartered Building belonging to the Maharaja of Burdwan , the Old Mint .The list continues endlessly.
When I stand besides these buildings I think of the British Managers who lorded over their Indian subordinates in these Chambers and after a hard day's work would sit on horse carriages and drive down to their nearest Clubs .
*And that brings me back to the club life of the City. Life in Kolkata is not complete until you have enjoyed the sports and games and nightlife of the City. Some of the prominent clubs of British legacy include Bengal Club, the Tollygunge Club, the Saturday Club and of course the Royal Calcutta Golf course . Golf remains a big draw and you can spend a good bit of the day socializing with friends from other corporates especially from the tea, metal processing , banking and fast moving consumer goods amongst others.
*The City has some fine English schools with excellent European legacy . Though the Anglo Indian community is fast dimishing ,there are still some top teachers from various communities. Some of the leading schools are La Martiniere for both boys and girls, St Xaviers, Loreto House , Don Bosco , Calcutta Boys and Girls and many others. These schools provide fantastic all round development and there is a great focus on academics too. Recently at a national level the City is losing out on competition and an attempt must be made to salvage the lost Glory.
*Coming to my favourite topic of food , some of the fantastic restaurants exist in Park Street with a lovely old world charm . A big name called Firpos has disappeared but many exist like Peter Cat, Mocambo, Moulin Rouge and some Chinese outlets like Waldorf and Peiping .
