Winter in Kolkata '20

It has been a pretty memorable winter in Kolkata . While the early phase in the first half of December has been pleasant , the chill started picking up from the third week and by the end of December and still onto the third week of January the temperature has often been going below 10 deg C.

The night of 25th December has been particularly memorable as we went to attend Christmas Carols and an evening of entertainment by the children of Tollygunge Club. The program was to bring in cheer into the life of orphaned and deprived children and I thought that the gesture was indeed thoughtful. We followed it up with dinner at the Belvedere . This was the restaurant serving Continental food and the same has been relocated to above the clubhouse. Flooring has a reflective marble style and the food has been really improved upon.

Coming back to the main theme , I picked up my new car too on December 25th. There was quite a celebration and a small party organized by the distributors of Maruti at the Dewars Garage. The night of January 1 passed off peacefully as it was a working day and to our pleasant surprise we were told that a special day off would be given by our organization to celebrate the 1st .

There were also some pet shows and Vintage Car rallys in the month of January . The wedding season sets in now and a son of one of my classmates who also happens to be an alumnus of mine in IIM , Calcutta also got married . It was touching to meet some of our common Professors who taught both the generations.

The year has also got off to a flying start as I could connect with some of my long forgotten classmates of IIT , Kharagpur in a special cafe called FabCafe in Loudon Street .

This is also a good time to play online chess and proceed for some long walks in the greenery of our beautiful block in Salt Lake . We shall slowly come off our woolens and approach yet another beautiful spring soon .

This month also has the Birthday of Netaji and Republic Day of India too.

Spirits of Estonia

http://www.inyourpocket.com/estonia/tallinn/Spirits-of-Estonia_56060f 1 For some of our readers, vodka might just be some colorless liquid that tastes like rubbing alcohol but goes great mixed in a cocktail. In Estonia however, hard liquor is pretty serious stuff.  Spirits can be made from many raw materials including grapes, potato, and grain. These days in Estonia the vast majority of vodka is made using high quality rye grain. First the raw material is fermented using yeast, which creates a weak alcohol or mash. Next this product is distilled creating a much stronger alcohol. Finally the impurities are filtered off, and water is added to bring the percentage from about 96 to about 40.And that is how you make vodka! Of course there is much to be said about quality and it certainly varies from brand to brand. The world’s best vodkas are made from the finest grains, the purest waters, multiple distillation & special filtration techniques.    A little h...
