Book Summary - The War that Saved my Life

"The War That Saved My Life" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley is a historical novel set during World War II. It follows the story of Ada, a ten-year-old girl with a clubfoot, who escapes her abusive mother and finds a new life and sense of self-worth in the English countryside.

Plot Summary:

Pre-War London:

  • Ada Smith: Ada lives in a small, one-room apartment in London with her cruel and abusive mother, whom she calls "Mam." Ada is born with a clubfoot, and Mam keeps her confined indoors, ashamed of her disability. Ada’s only solace is caring for her younger brother, Jamie.
  • Escape: As World War II begins, children are being evacuated from London to the countryside to escape the bombings. Ada seizes the opportunity and sneaks out with Jamie to join the evacuees, despite Mam's objections.

Kent Countryside:

  • Susan Smith: Ada and Jamie are placed in the care of Susan Smith, a reclusive woman who is initially reluctant to take them in. Susan is grieving the loss of her best friend, Becky, who had lived with her.
  • Adjusting to a New Life: Ada struggles to adapt to her new surroundings but gradually begins to experience freedom for the first time. Susan helps her learn to read and ride a pony named Butter, and Ada starts to gain confidence and independence.
  • Growth and Healing: As Ada becomes more comfortable, she opens up about her past and her disability. Susan takes Ada to a doctor who explains that Ada’s clubfoot can be surgically corrected, though the war complicates this possibility.

War and Challenges:

  • Jamie and the War: Jamie thrives in the countryside, but the war still affects their lives. Ada and Jamie witness the realities of war, including air raids and the presence of wounded soldiers.
  • Confronting the Past: Despite the new sense of belonging, Ada fears her mother's return. Mam eventually shows up, taking Ada and Jamie back to London. However, the experience with Susan has changed Ada, and she can no longer tolerate Mam's abuse.

Resolution:

  • Final Escape: Determined to protect her new life and her brother, Ada confronts Mam. She escapes again with Jamie and returns to Susan, who welcomes them back with open arms.
  • New Beginnings: The novel ends with Ada realizing that she is no longer the helpless girl Mam made her believe she was. Ada, Jamie, and Susan form a new family, filled with love, support, and the promise of a better future.

Themes:

  • Resilience and Courage: Ada’s journey showcases her incredible strength and determination to overcome adversity and find a better life.
  • Family and Belonging: The novel explores the concept of family, not just by blood but also by choice and love.
  • Healing and Transformation: Ada’s physical and emotional healing reflects her growth from a frightened, oppressed girl to a confident and capable young woman.

"The War That Saved My Life" is a poignant and inspiring story about overcoming abuse, finding self-worth, and the transformative power of love and kindness amidst the backdrop of war.

Spirits of Estonia

http://www.inyourpocket.com/estonia/tallinn/Spirits-of-Estonia_56060f 1 For some of our readers, vodka might just be some colorless liquid that tastes like rubbing alcohol but goes great mixed in a cocktail. In Estonia however, hard liquor is pretty serious stuff.  Spirits can be made from many raw materials including grapes, potato, and grain. These days in Estonia the vast majority of vodka is made using high quality rye grain. First the raw material is fermented using yeast, which creates a weak alcohol or mash. Next this product is distilled creating a much stronger alcohol. Finally the impurities are filtered off, and water is added to bring the percentage from about 96 to about 40.And that is how you make vodka! Of course there is much to be said about quality and it certainly varies from brand to brand. The world’s best vodkas are made from the finest grains, the purest waters, multiple distillation & special filtration techniques.    A little history   Alcohol wa
