Kant vs Emerson Philosophy

1. Core Focus

  • Kant: Concerned with how we know and how we ought to act — a philosopher of epistemology and ethics.

  • Emerson: Concerned with how we should live spiritually and intuitively — a philosopher of self and transcendence.

2. Knowledge and Experience

  • Kant: Claimed knowledge arises from the interaction of sense experience (empiricism) and reason (rationalism).

    • We cannot know “things-in-themselves” (noumena), only their appearances (phenomena).

  • Emerson: Believed intuition could directly grasp spiritual truths beyond sense and reason — a more mystical stance.

    • He rejected Kant’s limits on knowledge, claiming we can access divine truth through our inner spirit.

3. Role of the Individual

  • Kant: The rational individual must act according to universal moral laws (the categorical imperative).

  • Emerson: The individual should act according to inner conscience and self-reliance, guided by intuition rather than external rules.

4. God and Spirituality

  • Kant: Saw God as a moral postulate — not knowable by reason, but necessary for moral order.

  • Emerson: Saw God as immanent — present within nature and the human soul (the Over-Soul).

5. Morality

  • Kant: Morality is based on duty and reason — doing the right thing because it is right.

  • Emerson: Morality flows from inner divinity and harmony with nature, not from rational duty.

6. Freedom

  • Kant: Freedom means obeying the moral law we give ourselves through reason (autonomy).

  • Emerson: Freedom means trusting oneself and following inner intuition without conforming to society.

7. Nature

  • Kant: Nature is the world of appearances structured by human reason.

  • Emerson: Nature is divine and symbolic — a living reflection of the human spirit and God.

8. Influence

  • Emerson was inspired by Kant, but simplified and spiritualized Kantian ideas for an American context, blending them with mysticism and Romanticism.

Spirits of Estonia

http://www.inyourpocket.com/estonia/tallinn/Spirits-of-Estonia_56060f 1 For some of our readers, vodka might just be some colorless liquid that tastes like rubbing alcohol but goes great mixed in a cocktail. In Estonia however, hard liquor is pretty serious stuff.  Spirits can be made from many raw materials including grapes, potato, and grain. These days in Estonia the vast majority of vodka is made using high quality rye grain. First the raw material is fermented using yeast, which creates a weak alcohol or mash. Next this product is distilled creating a much stronger alcohol. Finally the impurities are filtered off, and water is added to bring the percentage from about 96 to about 40.And that is how you make vodka! Of course there is much to be said about quality and it certainly varies from brand to brand. The world’s best vodkas are made from the finest grains, the purest waters, multiple distillation & special filtration techniques.    A little h...
