The new LSD –Learn to Slow Down

A slower-paced life means making time to enjoy your mornings, instead of rushing off to work in a frenzy. It means taking time to enjoy whatever you’re doing, to appreciate the outdoors, to actually focus on whoever you’re talking to or spending time with — instead of always being connected to a Blackberry or iPhone or laptop, instead of always thinking about work tasks and emails. It means single-tasking rather than switching between a multitude of tasks and focusing on none of them. Slowing down is a conscious choice, and not always an easy one, but it leads to a greater appreciation for life and a greater level of happiness. Some tips from Leo Babauta on Zen Habits in breathing: 1. Do less – Identify 3 critical tasks for the day and focus on achieving the same. As Horace Walpole once said - The whole secret of life is to be interested in one thing profoundly and in a thousand things well. 2. Be present - Focus on what you are doing instead of allowing your mind to fly in...

Simple approach to happiness

I picked up this thought on life simplification from Marcus Aurelius' meditations. How stupid we are at work and at home in our attempt to achieve too many things at once and fall flat in the process.  If you want to be happy says Democritus -do little. May it not be better to do what is necessary ,what the reason of a naturally social being demands and the way reason demands it be done. This brings the happiness both of right action and of little action. Most of what we say and do is unnecessary . Remove the superfluity , and you will have more time and less bother. So in every case one should prompt oneself - is this or is it not something necessary. And the removal of the unnecessary should apply not only to actions but to thoughts also ; then no redundant actions either will follow.

Kolkata for Professionals

While the downsides are always highlighted , nn a different note I would say that Kolkata is an exciting  city for professionals . Being away from the cacophony of sounds like Mumbai or Chennai , one can spend quality time ruminating and getting one's thoughts and views clear without succumbing to peer pressure. Secondly motivations are different in the sense that one is fundamentally away from materialistic needs and can pursue the Truth and one's vision in isolation. With the militancy mindset of workers slowly dying down , I think one will see a fundamental improvement in the work culture of blue collared labourers. No beating the fact that even bluecollared workers here are far more educated than their counterparts in other parts of the country . With flyovers and the Police controlling the traffic well , one is protected from the numerous traffic jams of Bangalore where I have missed a flight whenever I have gone on work. The beautification of the city cont...

History of the Baidya Community of Bengal

http://www.indianetzone.com/27/history_baidya_community.htm Legend has it that Dhanvantari was born when the devas and asuras churned the ocean. He is considered to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and has four hands - in one he holds medicinal herbs and in one the text of Ayurveda. He was the first Baidya. Another legend about his birth is that when the sage Galava was on a pilgrimage and dying of thirst, he accepted water from a Vaidya girl named Virbhadra. He blessed her and said she would have a son. But as she was unmarried, Galava chanted a Vedic mantra and a boy arose out of a wisp of grass and it was this child who was Dhanvantari. He is also known as Amritacharya or Ambastha. He was a Baidya because he owed his birth to a Vedic hymn and he was an Ambastha because he had no father and was brought up by the mother and her family. So Baidyas are also called Ambasthas. But Baidyas say that Ambastha is the name of a place on the banks of the river Indus from where o...

Attaining Objectives through Effective Time Management

I would suggest you would need to consider 5 factors to reach an effective way of managing your time : 1.Take control of your mind The mind is fickle , unsteady & restless . It tends to worry about the past and become anxious about the future. The mind needs a powerful intellect to focus its attention on the present occupation. It is thus important to develop and strengthen the intellect to be able to manage the wavering mind. 2.Set up objectives What you are inherently strong at is known as your svadharma while what is alien to you is known as paradharma. You have to decide whether you wish to be an accomplished cricketer , a footballer like Messi, a top oncologist pursuing cancer research or a business development expert using cutting edge technology. You need to figure out what would make you stand out of the crowd and what you enjoy doing .Even a 5% edge would give you a headstart. 3.Identify quality & quantity of resources Once your o...

Learning Targets for 2017

Happy New Year . Some interesting things you can focus on this year .   They come from my friend Donald  http://www.lifeoptimizer.org/2017/01/03/skills-to-learn-this-year/ 1. Writing Like it or not, how people value you depends on how you communicate yourself. You might have the skills, but if you can’t communicate yourself well, people will still doubt your value. That’s why the first two skills that I list here are communication skills. Communication skills are just as important today as they were a hundred years ago. The first one of them is writing . If you haven’t done anything about it, I encourage you to upgrade your writing skills. In my case, I do it through blogging. I have been blogging since 2006, and I have learned a lot about writing during that time. To improve your writing skills, consider starting your own blog. Or you could start a personal journal. You might also want to read the books that I recommend below. Recommended Resource...
